Kinematic Analysis

Kinematic analysis is the quantitative study of motion, describing how body segments or objects change position, velocity, and acceleration over time. In neuroscience, researchers use motion capture, video tracking, or wearable sensors to record trajectories and calculate variables such as joint angles, timing, range of motion, and movement smoothness without directly measuring the forces causing movement. These measurements help link motor behavior to brain function by revealing how neural injury, disease, learning, or stimulation alters coordination and control. Kinematic analysis supports studies of motor planning and execution, behavioral assessment, rehabilitation, and the development of objective biomarkers for neurological disorders.

Source: Ketron Mitchell-Wynne, PhD, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment demonstrates the kinematics of motion in 1 and 2 dimensions. This lab will begin by studying motion in 1 dimension, under constant acceleration, by launching a projectile directly upward and measuring the maximum height reached. This lab will verify that the maximum height reached is consistent with the kinematic...

Kinematic gait analysis in the sagittal plane yields highly precise information about how movement is executed. We describe the application of these techniques to identify gait deficits for mice subjected to autoimmune-mediated demyelination. These methods may also be used to characterize gait deficits for other mouse models featuring impaired locomotion.

Kinematic Equations - I

When an object moves with constant acceleration, the velocity of the object changes at a constant rate throughout the motion. The kinematic equations of motions are derived for such cases where the acceleration of the object is constant. The first kinematic equation gives an insight into the relationship between velocity, acceleration, and time. We can see, for example: Final velocity depends on how large the acceleration is and how long it lasts If the acceleration is zero, then the final...

Web-based Clinician Guide to Record Compatible Video of Standardized Drinking Task Kinematics for Computer Vision Analysis

2025

Kinematic metrics of the drinking task have been recommended for use in upper limb stroke rehabilitation, but conventional approaches to kinematic studies are considered impractical. The current protocol describes a web-based guide to capture videos of the drinking task, which are compatible with computer vision to extract recommended kinematic metrics.
