Nerve Conduction Velocity

Nerve conduction velocity (NCV) is the speed at which an electrical impulse travels along a peripheral nerve, providing a quantitative measure of nerve function in neuroscience and clinical assessment. In a typical test, electrodes stimulate a nerve at one or more sites and record the evoked response, allowing velocity to be calculated from the distance between stimulation points and the difference in response latency. Myelination, axon diameter, and temperature influence conduction speed, while slowed or blocked transmission can indicate nerve injury or peripheral neuropathy. NCV measurements help characterize sensory and motor dysfunction, localize lesions, and monitor disease progression or recovery.

Take an anesthetized rat with an exposed intact right sciatic nerve, which controls leg movement and sensation.Excise a nerve segment, creating a gap, severing the neuronal axons, and disrupting signal transmission. The severed distal axons deteriorate, detaching specialized nerve-repair or Schwann cells.Suture a bionic conductive nerve scaffold, a soft tube with microchannels, to the epineurium, the nerve’s outer layer, at both cut ends.Implant paired electrodes near the nerve ends, passing...

Construction of Constant-Load (Isotonic) and Constant-Velocity (Isokinetic) Torque-Velocity-Power Profiles In vivo for the Rat Plantar Flexors

2025

Here, we present a novel protocol to non-invasively measure the torque-angular velocity-power relationship in vivo in rat plantar flexors using transcutaneous muscle stimulation. This setup enables simple testing of isotonic muscle contractions on a force transducer/length controller system to better represent the constant-load nature of everyday movements.

Nerve Excitability Assessment in Chemotherapy-induced Neurotoxicity

This abstract describes a novel method to assess the development of neurotoxicity in patients receiving chemotherapy treatment. While conventional assessment methods are limited in their ability to detect early changes in nerve function, nerve excitability techniques provide early identification of patients at risk of severe neurotoxicity and insight into pathophysiology.
