Neural Culture Maintenance

Neural culture maintenance is the controlled practice of keeping neurons, glial cells, or neural tissue viable and functional outside the organism for neuroscience research. It relies on sterile technique, appropriate culture substrates, nutrient-rich medium, and stable temperature, gas, and pH conditions, with regular monitoring and medium replacement to support cell survival while limiting contamination and unwanted cellular changes. Well-maintained cultures provide reproducible models for studying neuronal development, synaptic activity, neurotoxicity, and disease mechanisms. They also support drug screening and experimental investigations of neural repair, helping researchers examine cellular responses under defined laboratory conditions.

Explant Culture of Neural Tissue

2023

The intricate structure of the vertebrate nervous system arises from a complex series of events involving cell differentiation, cell migration, and changes in cell morphology. Studying these processes is essential to our understanding of nervous system function as well as our ability to diagnose and treat disorders that result from abnormal development. However, neural tissues are relatively inaccessible for experimental manipulations, especially in embryonic mammals. As a result, many...
