Nitrogen Pumped Dye Laser

A nitrogen pumped dye laser is a pulsed, wavelength-tunable light source in which ultraviolet radiation from excited nitrogen gas drives an organic dye to emit light at selected wavelengths. An electrical discharge creates a brief ultraviolet pulse, and the dye amplifies this energy through stimulated emission within an optical cavity; changing the dye or cavity conditions tunes the output. In neuroscience, these lasers can provide wavelength-specific excitation for fluorescence imaging, photochemical uncaging, and studies of neural signaling. Their short pulses, tunability, and high peak intensity support precise control of light-sensitive probes while limiting exposure outside targeted experimental conditions.

The Nitrogen Cycle

2019

Nitrogen atoms, present in all proteins and DNA, are recycled between abiotic and biotic components of the ecosystem. However, the primary form of nitrogen on Earth is nitrogen gas, which cannot be used by most animals and plants. Thus, nitrogen gas must first be converted into a usable form by nitrogen-fixing bacteria before it can be cycled through other living organisms. The use of nitrogen-containing fertilizers and animal waste products in human agriculture has greatly influenced the...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Neil Branda — Simon Fraser University Degassing refers to the process by which dissolved gases are removed from a liquid. The presence of dissolved gases such as oxygen or carbon dioxide can impede chemical reactions that utilize sensitive reagents, interfere with spectroscopic measurements, or can induce unwanted bubble formation. A number of different techniques are available for degassing liquids; some of these include heating, ultrasonic agitation, chemical...
