Passive Avoidance Task

The passive avoidance task is a behavioral assay used to measure learning and memory by testing how long an animal avoids an environment associated with an aversive event. Typically, an animal moves from a brightly lit compartment into a preferred dark compartment, where it receives a mild foot shock; during a later trial, increased latency to re-enter the dark compartment indicates retention of the learned association. Researchers use this task to assess memory formation, consolidation, and retrieval, and to evaluate how brain lesions, neural circuits, drugs, aging, or neurological disease affect aversive learning and memory performance.

This work describes a simple behavioral paradigm that allows the analysis of aversive associative learning in adult fruit flies. The method is based on suppressing the innate negative geotaxis behavior due to the association formed between a specific environmental context and an electric shock.

Frustration and Conflict: Avoidance-Avoidance, Double-Approach Avoidance

2025

Avoidance-avoidance conflict refers to a psychological situation where a person must choose between two or more unpleasant alternatives. These conflicts are particularly stressful because neither option is desirable. This dilemma is often expressed in sayings like "caught between a rock and a hard place" or "between the devil and the deep blue sea." For instance, individuals who fear dental procedures may find themselves torn between enduring a painful toothache or facing the anxiety of...

We describe a computer-controlled device for investigating the sense of touch: the Tactile Automated Passive-finger Stimulator (TAPS). We describe the components of TAPS, and show how TAPS is used to administer a two-interval forced-choice tactile grating orientation test.

Piaget's Conservation Task and the Influence of Task Demands

Source: Laboratories of Judith Danovitch and Nicholaus Noles—University of Louisville Jean Piaget was a pioneer in the field of developmental psychology, and his theory of cognitive development is one of the most well-known psychological theories. At the heart of Piaget’s theory is the idea that children’s ways of thinking change over the course of childhood. Piaget provided evidence for these changes by comparing how children of different ages responded to questions and problems that he...
