Electrical Resistance Monitoring

Electrical Resistance Monitoring is a technique that tracks how strongly a material or biological tissue opposes the flow of electrical current, providing a noninvasive measure of structural and functional changes. In neuroscience, electrodes apply a controlled voltage or current and record the resulting electrical response; changes in resistance can reflect altered ion movement, membrane integrity, cell-cell junctions, or barrier permeability. Researchers use this approach to assess neuronal and glial cultures, evaluate blood-brain barrier models, monitor tissue responses, and detect changes during development, injury, or disease. Its quantitative, time-resolved measurements support drug testing and the validation of in vitro neural systems.

Assessing Transendothelial Electrical Resistance in an In Vitro Blood-Brain Barrier Model

2025

This video demonstrates a method for assessing transendothelial electrical resistance (TEER) in mouse brain microvascular endothelial cells in vitro. A high TEER value indicates intact endothelial cell junctions, while the addition of activated T cells lowers the TEER value, reflecting disruption of the junctional barrier.

Monitoring Electrical Signals from the Afferent Neurons in an Immobilized Zebrafish Larva

This video demonstrates the recording of electrical signals from the afferent neurons in a paralyzed zebrafish larva by positioning a micropipette near the lateral line ganglion and forming a loose seal for signal capture. The extracellular solution maintains neuronal viability during this process.

Drug resistance testing for HIV-1 infected individuals failing antiretroviral therapy (ART) can guide future therapies and improve treatment outcomes. Optimizing individual and population health outcomes in high HIV prevalence but resource-limited settings will ultimately require affordable and accessible drug resistance genotyping and interpretation methods.

Monitoring Seizure-Induced Neural Electrical Activity in Brain Slices Using Microelectrode Arrays

2025

This protocol involves using a microelectrode array (MEA) to record electrical activity in a brain slice exposed to a seizure-inducing drug. The procedure includes positioning the brain slice in an MEA recording chamber, applying electrical stimulation to induce artificial seizures, and analyzing the resulting signals.
