Preclinical Electromyography

Preclinical electromyography (EMG) is a research method that records the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles in laboratory animals, providing an objective measure of motor function before clinical testing. Surface or needle electrodes detect voltage changes generated when motor neurons activate muscle fibers, allowing researchers to assess recruitment, firing patterns, conduction, and coordination during rest or movement. In neuroscience, preclinical EMG helps characterize neuromuscular disorders, evaluate nerve or spinal cord injury, and measure responses to drugs, stimulation, prosthetic devices, or rehabilitation protocols. These recordings connect neural activity with muscle performance and support the development and validation of treatments.

Preclinical Development: Overview

2023

Preclinical development consists of a series of tests that ensure the safety and efficacy of a new therapeutic compound before it is tested in humans. There are four main phases to this process. First, safety pharmacology tests are conducted to ensure the drug does not produce any acutely harmful effects. These tests examine parameters such as bronchoconstriction, cardiac dysrhythmias, blood pressure changes, and ataxia. Next, preliminary toxicological testing is performed to determine the...
