Stage-top Incubator

A stage-top incubator is a compact environmental chamber that maintains living specimens under controlled conditions during microscopy, enabling stable observation over extended periods. Positioned directly on a microscope stage, it regulates factors such as temperature, carbon dioxide, humidity, and gas exchange to preserve cell viability and physiological activity while minimizing disruptions from specimen transfer. In neuroscience, stage-top incubators support live-cell imaging of neurons, glial cells, brain organoids, and neural networks, including time-lapse studies of development, signaling, migration, and degeneration. By combining environmental control with high-resolution microscopy, they improve the reliability and duration of experiments involving dynamic neural processes.

Laboratory soil warming experiments usually employ two or more constant temperatures in multiple chambers. By presenting a sophisticated environmental chamber, we provide an accurate temperature control method to imitate the magnitude and amplitude of in situ soil temperature and improve the experimental design of soil incubation studies.

Responding for food or drug-paired cues increases over the course of a period of abstinence and this may relate to an increased susceptibility to relapse behaviors. Here we detail a procedure for evaluating this "incubation of craving" in rats that have self-administered sucrose.

A Technique for the Prolonged Incubation of Neuronal Tissue of the Retina

2025

This video demonstrates a method for prolonged incubation of neuronal tissue of the retina. Eyecups containing retina are obtained from a mouse eye; the inner limiting membrane (ILM) is enzymatically digested to expose the neuronal cells of the retina, and either the treated eyecup or the isolated retina is transferred to a specialized incubator for prolonged incubation at a low temperature.
