Surface-based Analysis

Surface-based analysis is a neuroimaging approach that represents the brain’s anatomy as reconstructed cortical surfaces, enabling measurements that respect the folded geometry of the cortex. Using structural MRI, computational methods identify the gray matter boundaries, generate a three-dimensional mesh, and calculate features such as cortical thickness, surface area, curvature, and sulcal patterns. Researchers can then align corresponding cortical regions across individuals and evaluate how anatomy varies with development, aging, neurological disease, or cognitive function. In neuroscience, these measurements provide anatomically precise biomarkers and complement volume-based analysis by revealing localized changes along the cortical sheet.

We illustrate the application of 1H(15N,αγ)12C resonant nuclear reaction analysis (NRA) to quantitatively evaluate the density of hydrogen atoms on the surface, in the volume, and at an interfacial layer of solid materials. The near-surface hydrogen depth profiling of a Pd(110) single crystal and of SiO2/Si(100) stacks is described.

2025

Here, we describe a protocol to record and analyze respiratory electromyography (EMG) signals. It includes the anatomic references for placing the EMG electrodes over several respiratory muscles, removing electrocardiographic noise from the EMG signals, and acquiring the EMG root mean square (RMS) and onset timing of activity.
