Surgical Visualization

Surgical visualization is the use of optical, imaging, and navigation technologies to make anatomical structures visible during an operation, supporting accurate and safe clinical decisions. In neuroscience, operating microscopes, endoscopes, neuronavigation systems, and fluorescence-guided imaging enhance contrast and spatial orientation by combining real-time views with preoperative scans or tissue-specific signals. These methods help surgeons distinguish brain regions, blood vessels, tumors, and functional tissue while minimizing unnecessary disruption. Improved visualization supports procedures such as tumor resection, vascular repair, and deep-brain interventions, and advances in three-dimensional imaging, augmented reality, and intraoperative imaging continue to strengthen precision and patient outcomes.

Source: Rennert, R. C., et al. Comprehensive Endovascular and Open Surgical Management of Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformations. J. Vis. Exp. (2017).This video demonstrates the open surgical resection of a cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in a human brain. The procedure involves creating a bone flap, accessing the subarachnoid space, identifying and occluding feeding arteries and draining veins, and carefully removing the AVM. Intraoperative angiography confirms complete resection,...
