Synaptic Current Measurement

Synaptic current measurement is an electrophysiological technique used to quantify the electrical currents generated when neurons communicate, providing a direct readout of synaptic function. In a patch-clamp recording, typically performed under voltage-clamp conditions, electrodes hold a neuron’s membrane potential while spontaneous or stimulus-evoked postsynaptic currents are detected and analyzed for amplitude, frequency, and timing. These measurements help distinguish excitatory and inhibitory transmission, assess neurotransmitter receptor activity, and evaluate changes in synaptic strength. Synaptic current measurement is therefore central to studying neural circuits, plasticity, development, and the cellular effects of neurological disease or pharmacological treatments.

2025

This video demonstrates the technique for recording synaptic currents from a synaptic bouton at the Drosophila larva's neuromuscular junction. This technique enables monitoring the activity of a single synaptic bouton, which is important for the study of mutant fly lines with enhanced spontaneous or asynchronous synaptic activity.
