Tdcs Variability

tDCS variability refers to differences in how individuals respond to transcranial direct current stimulation, a noninvasive method that applies weak electrical currents through scalp electrodes to influence brain activity. Response variability can arise from electrode montage, current intensity and duration, head and brain anatomy, baseline neural state, and differences in how electric fields reach cortical tissue. In neuroscience, characterizing these sources helps explain inconsistent behavioral and physiological outcomes across studies and participants. Measuring and modeling this variability supports more reproducible experiments, improves dose selection, and may enable individualized stimulation protocols for cognitive research and therapeutic development.

The goal of this pilot study is to describe a protocol for the remotely-supervised delivery of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) so that the procedure maintains standards of in-clinic practice, including safety, reproducibility, and tolerability. The feasibility of this protocol was tested in participants with multiple sclerosis (MS).

High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS), with its 4x1-ring montage, is a noninvasive brain stimulation technique that combines both the neuromodulatory effects of conventional tDCS with increased focality. This article provides a systematic demonstration of the use of 4x1 HD-tDCS, and the considerations needed for safe and effective stimulation.

Random Variables

2023

A random variable is a single numerical value that indicates the outcome of a procedure. The concept of random variables is fundamental to the probability theory and was introduced by a Russian mathematician, Pafnuty Chebyshev, in the mid-nineteenth century. Uppercase letters such as X or Y denote a random variable. Lowercase letters like x or y denote the value of a random variable. If X is a random variable, then X is written in words, and x is given as a number. For example, let X = the...

Variability: Analysis

Measures of variability are statistical metrics that reveal the dispersion pattern within a dataset. They are pivotal in biostatistics, providing insights into the heterogeneity within health and biological data. Variability signifies the degree to which data points diverge from one another, helping researchers understand the potential range of values and associated uncertainty within the data. The range is a simple measure of variability, indicating the difference between the highest and...
