Ventral Medulla

The ventral medulla is the anterior portion of the medulla oblongata, a lower-brainstem region that integrates vital autonomic functions and carries major motor pathways. Its neuronal circuits regulate breathing, cardiovascular activity, and visceral responses, while the medullary pyramids transmit corticospinal signals and cross at the pyramidal decussation to coordinate voluntary movement. The ventral medulla also contains structures such as the inferior olivary complex, which contributes to motor learning through connections with the cerebellum. Studying this region helps researchers understand motor control, respiratory and cardiovascular regulation, brainstem organization, and the neurological consequences of medullary injury or disease.

Brainstem: Control Centers of Medulla

2025

The medulla oblongata is a crucial part of the brainstem responsible for controlling various autonomic and involuntary functions. It contains several nuclei, including the olivary, cuneate, gracile, and solitary nuclei. Olivary Nucleus The olivary nucleus, or inferior olivary nucleus, is located within the ventrolateral part of the medulla oblongata. It is primarily involved in motor coordination and motor learning. The olivary nucleus receives input from the spinal cord, cerebellum, and motor...

Co-culturing of Ventral Hippocampal and Nucleus Accumbens

This video demonstrates the process of preparing ventral hippocampal and nucleus accumbens tissues from mouse brains for co-culture. Neurons extend projections to form synaptic connections between the ventral hippocampal and nucleus accumbens tissues. This method allows studying neuronal interactions between these two brain regions, offering insights into cognition, behavior, and neurological disorders.

Sympathetic Pathways: Collateral Ganglia and Adrenal Medulla

2025

The sympathetic pathways of the collateral ganglia and adrenal medulla serve unique but interconnected roles in the sympathetic response. Collateral Ganglia Sympathetic preganglionic axons reach the collateral ganglia along the route of splanchnic nerves. These nerves bypass the sympathetic trunk and communicate with sympathetic postganglionic neurons housed in the prevertebral ganglia. These ganglia supply the organs of the abdominopelvic cavity. The greater splanchnic nerve, formed by the...

In ovo Expression of MicroRNA in Ventral Chick Midbrain

Ectopic expression is one technique to elucidate the microRNAs role in brain development. However, targeting specific areas using in ovo electroporation is challenging. Here, we show an efficient way to selectively electroporate ventral and dorsal midbrain regions.
