Diazepam Convulsions

Diazepam convulsions refers to the pharmacological use of diazepam to prevent or terminate convulsive seizures, making it an important emergency intervention in clinical and experimental pharmacology. As a benzodiazepine, diazepam enhances gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA_A) receptor signaling, increasing chloride ion influx and reducing neuronal excitability; this suppresses the uncontrolled neural activity that produces convulsions. Its rapid anticonvulsant action supports the acute management of seizure episodes and provides a model for studying central nervous system inhibition, drug potency, and adverse effects such as sedation and respiratory depression. These principles also guide the development and evaluation of newer antiseizure therapies.

This video demonstrates how to employ two neural stimulants, aldicarb and pentylenetetrazole (PTZ), in complementary ways to study synaptic function in the nematode, C. elegans. This complementary approach may also be used to shed light on evolutionarily conserved mechanisms for modulating neuronal synchrony and has implications for epilepsy and seizures.

Forebrain Electrophysiological Recording in Larval Zebrafish

A simple method to record extracellular field potentials in the larval zebrafish forebrain is described. The method provides a robust in vivo read-out of seizure-like activity. This technique can be used with genetically modified zebrafish larvae carrying epilepsy-related genes or seizures evoked by administration of convulsant drugs.
