Intramuscular Injection

Intramuscular injection is a drug-administration technique that delivers medication into skeletal muscle, where it can enter the bloodstream and produce systemic effects. A needle penetrates the muscle to deposit a measured dose, and absorption depends on factors such as muscle perfusion, injection site, drug formulation, and tissue characteristics; aqueous solutions generally enter circulation more readily than depot preparations. In pharmacology, this route supports vaccination and the administration of selected antibiotics, hormones, analgesics, and other medicines when oral delivery is unsuitable or a sustained effect is desired. Proper site selection and technique help promote reliable absorption while reducing pain, tissue injury, and other complications.

Since muscle fibers are well perfused, this route of administration provides quick uptake of the medication and allows for the administration of relatively large volumes. Skeletal muscles have fewer pain-sensing nerves than subcutaneous tissue, which allows for the less painful administration of irritating drugs...

(2015)This video demonstrates the targeted delivery of a fluorescent neuronal tracer into motor neurons via intramuscular injection at the motor end plates (MEPs). It outlines the steps involved in preparing the rat, injecting the tracer, and assessing labeled motor neurons for neurotherapeutic potential.

The efficacy of intramuscular uptake and retrograde transport of molecules to corresponding motor neurons depends on the location of the injection sites with respect to the motor end plates (MEPs). Here, we describe how to locate MEPs on skeletal muscles to optimise retrograde transport of tracers into motor neurons.
