Electrical Engineering

Electrical engineering is the branch of engineering that applies electricity, electromagnetism, and electronics to design, analyze, and control systems that generate, transmit, process, and use electrical energy and information. It works by modeling voltage, current, charge, and electromagnetic fields, then applying circuit laws, semiconductor behavior, signal processing, and control principles to predict system behavior and convert physical inputs into useful outputs. In physics, these ideas connect fundamental laws to practical technologies such as power grids, electric machines, communication systems, sensors, and computing hardware. Electrical engineering supports energy efficiency, automation, medical instrumentation, and emerging technologies while providing quantitative tools for understanding how electrical systems operate and interact with the physical world.

Engineered muscle tissue has great potential in regenerative medicine, as disease model and also as an alternative source for meat. Here we describe the engineering of a muscle construct, in this case from mouse myoblast progenitor cells, and the stimulation by electrical pulses.

Changing the Direction and Orientation of Electric Field During Electric Pulses Application Improves Plasmid Gene Transfer in vitro

Gene transfection by electroporation is improved approximately two times when orientation of electric field is changed during pulse application, while cell viability is not affected. The increase in gene transfection is caused by the increase of the membrane area which is made competent for DNA entry into the cell.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Electric potential, also known as "voltage", measures the electric potential energy per unit charge. Electric field is a scalar quantity and is fundamental to many electrical effects. Like potential energy, what is physically meaningful is the difference in the electric potential. For example, the spatial variation in the electric potential is related to the electric...

An Overview of Genetic Engineering

2023

Genetic engineering – the process of purposefully altering an organism’s DNA – has been used to create powerful research tools and model organisms, and has also seen many agricultural applications. However, in order to engineer traits to tackle complex agricultural problems such as stress tolerance, or to realize the promise of gene therapy for treating human diseases, further advances in the field are still needed. Important considerations include the safe and efficient delivery of genetic...
