Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers are mechanical devices that clear rain, snow, and debris from vehicle windows, maintaining driver visibility and illustrating practical applications of physics. An electric motor turns a crank connected to a linkage, converting rotary motion into the back-and-forth motion of wiper arms; flexible rubber blades press against the glass, using contact forces and friction to sweep away liquid. Wiper performance depends on blade pressure, motion, surface condition, and fluid behavior. Studying windshield wipers connects rotational and oscillatory motion with friction, mechanical design, and fluid removal, supporting safer transportation and improvements in automated and sensor-controlled cleaning systems.

We collected, stained and imaged cells from the conjunctiva of the inner eyelid margin of human subjects. By characterizing cell morphology and metabolic activity, this method may further our understanding of dry eye and the role that friction between the ocular surfaces may play in perceiving ocular discomfort.

This protocol describes the characterization of DNA polymerase synthesis of modified DNA through observation of changes to near-infrared fluorescently labeled DNA using gel electrophoresis and gel imaging. Acrylamide gels are used for high resolution imaging of the separation of short nucleic acids, which migrate at different rates depending on size.

Source: Lim, M., et al. Modeling Brain Metastasis by Internal Carotid Artery Injection of Cancer Cells. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)In this video, an anesthetized mouse undergoes a surgical procedure in which cancer cells are injected into the common carotid artery (CCA) to facilitate targeted delivery to the brain. The procedure involves precise suturing and manipulation of the carotid arteries to direct the injected cells toward the internal carotid artery (ICA), promoting tumor formation in the brain...
