Elaborative Rehearsal

Elaborative rehearsal is a memory strategy that strengthens new information by connecting it to meaningful knowledge, personal experiences, or related concepts. Unlike simple repetition, it promotes deeper processing by encouraging a learner to explain, organize, visualize, or associate information with material already stored in long-term memory, increasing the likelihood of encoding and later retrieval. In psychology, elaborative rehearsal helps explain why meaningful learning is generally more durable than rote memorization. Applications include classroom instruction, study techniques, vocabulary learning, and interventions designed to support memory in aging or cognitive impairment, making it valuable for understanding how attention, semantic encoding, and retrieval interact.

Elaborative Rehearsals

2025

Elaborative rehearsal is a crucial cognitive strategy that strengthens information encoding in long-term memory by making meaningful connections between new data and pre-existing knowledge. This approach contrasts with maintenance rehearsal, which involves simple repetition without delving into the significance of the information. While maintenance rehearsal might temporarily keep information active in short-term memory, it is less effective for long-term retention. The effectiveness of...

Chunking and Rehearsal in Sensory Memory

2025

Improving short-term memory can be achieved through techniques like chunking and rehearsal. Chunking involves organizing information into larger, more manageable units. This technique is particularly useful for information that exceeds the typical memory span of between five and nine items. For instance, logging into an online account with a password like "ta89vq0179gz" involves grouping letters and numbers into three chunks—ta89, vq01, and 79gz. It makes large amounts of information more...

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Anterograde amnesia is the loss of the ability to form new memories. This can be distinguished from retrograde amnesia, which is the loss of old memories. Anterograde amnesia can result from damage to structures in the brain that are involved in the formation of new memories. Patients who have damage to the structures of the medial temporal lobe, including the hippocampus, amygdala, and the surrounding...

Social Facilitation

Not all intergroup interactions lead to negative outcomes. Sometimes, being in a group situation can improve performance. Social facilitation occurs when an individual performs better when an audience is watching than when the individual performs the behavior alone. This typically occurs when people are performing a task for which they are skilled. Can you think of an example in which having an audience could improve performance? One common example is sports. Skilled basketball players will be...
