Fluid Intelligence

Fluid intelligence is the capacity to reason through unfamiliar problems, identify patterns, and adapt strategies without relying primarily on previously learned knowledge. It draws on working memory, attentional control, and relational reasoning to hold information in mind, detect rules, and generate solutions when task demands are new. In psychology, researchers measure it with tasks such as matrix reasoning, series completion, and other assessments that minimize dependence on acquired vocabulary or factual knowledge. Findings inform theories of cognitive development, aging, education, and individual differences, while helping researchers investigate how flexible thinking changes across the lifespan.

We present a Turing-like Handshake test administered through a telerobotic system in which the interrogator is holding a robotic stylus and interacting with another party (human or artificial). We use a forced choice method, and extract a measure for the similarity of the artificial model to a human handshake.

The term "intelligence" is complex because it refers to both behavior and individuals, and its interpretation varies across cultures. European Americans tend to link intelligence with reasoning and cognitive skills, while in Kenya, it is tied to responsible participation in family and social life. In Uganda, intelligence is seen as the ability to know the right actions and carry them out effectively, while the Iatmul people of Papua New Guinea associate it with the capacity to remember detailed...

There is a need to develop alternative prosthesis attachment due to limb loss attributed to vascular occlusive diseases and trauma. The goal of the work is to introduce an osseointegrated intelligent implant design system to increase skeletal fixation and reduce periprosthetic infection rates for patients needing osseointegrated technology.

Measures of Intelligence

Psychologists measure intelligence by using standardized tests that produce a score known as the intelligence quotient or IQ. To understand IQ tests, it's important to recognize the key principles behind their construction: validity, reliability, and standardization. Validity refers to how well a test measures what it claims to measure. An intelligence test should accurately assess intelligence rather than another characteristic, like anxiety. Criterion validity is one way to evaluate this; it...

Spatial Measurement of Tumor Interstitial Fluid Pressure: A Method to Measure the Interstitial Fluid Pressure

2023

This video describes a technique of measuring the interstitial fluid pressure within a tumor by perfusion imaging using an image-guided robotic system. Measurements are compared to the intra-tumoral accumulation of liposomes, within a solid tumor.
