Toddler Growth

Toddler growth refers to the physical, cognitive, language, and socioemotional changes that typically occur between about one and three years of age, shaping early independence and later development. These changes arise through ongoing brain maturation and experience-dependent learning, as toddlers practice motor skills, build vocabulary, regulate emotions, and develop through responsive interactions with caregivers and their surroundings. Studying toddler growth helps psychologists distinguish expected developmental variation from potential concerns and informs observation, developmental assessment, parenting support, and early intervention. Understanding this period also clarifies how early relationships and learning experiences contribute to emerging self-regulation, communication, and social competence.

Toddler and Preschool Child Exam

2023

Source: Heather Collette and Jaideep Talwalkar; Yale School of Medicine The key to a successful exam of a toddler or preschool-age child is building rapport and trust between them and the provider. Toddlers, in particular, may be wary of strangers and unwilling to cooperate with the physical exam, which is expected age-appropriate behavior. In order to provide good care and create a comfortable patient experience, clinicians need to tailor their interaction to the child's developmental stage.

We describe the methods for continuous monitoring of the autonomic nervous system under resting and challenge conditions with 18 month old children. Results revealed that this protocol can produce meaningful physiological responses in both branches of the autonomic nervous system and elicit significant individual variability in patterns of responses.

Exponential Population Growth Model ExpandNOTE: In these experiments you will use computer software to simulate different types of growth models. HYPOTHESES: The experimental hypothesis might be that if we increase either R, the reproductive rate or the initial population size, NT, that this will increase the population size after 10 generations in an exponential growth model compared to unmanipulated control populations. The null hypothesis may be that populations of different R and initial...
