Treatment Efficacy

Treatment efficacy is the extent to which a psychological intervention produces beneficial outcomes under controlled research conditions, making it central to evaluating whether therapy works. Researchers assess efficacy by comparing treatment outcomes with a control or comparison condition and measuring changes in symptoms, functioning, or other predefined indicators, often using standardized assessments and effect sizes. In psychology, efficacy studies help distinguish intervention effects from natural recovery, expectancy, or other influences. Their findings guide evidence-based practice, inform treatment selection, and provide a foundation for later effectiveness research examining how well interventions perform across diverse patients and real-world clinical settings.
