Five Number Summary

A five number summary is a statistical description of a dataset based on its minimum, first quartile, median, third quartile, and maximum values. These five values divide ordered observations into sections, showing the data’s center, spread, and overall range; the interquartile range, calculated as the third quartile minus the first quartile, measures the middle 50% of observations. In statistics, five number summaries support quick comparisons between datasets and provide the foundation for box-and-whisker plots. They can also reveal skewed distributions, unusually large or small values, and differences in variability, making them useful for exploratory data analysis and clear communication of results.

2023

In a dataset, the 5-number summary includes the minimum data value, the data value of the first quartile, the median data value or data value of the second quartile, the data value of the third quartile, and the maximum data value. These 5 data values can be visualized as a box and whisker plot. In a box plot, the minimum and maximum data values represent the lower and upper whiskers in the graph, and the median is designated as the center of the box in the chart. The first quartile and third...

We demonstrate how changes in the intracellular free calcium concentration and synaptic efficacy can be simultaneously monitored in a ganglion preparation of Aplysia. We image intracellular calcium using a fluorescent dye, Calcium Orange, and induce and monitor synaptic transmission with sharp (intracellular) electrodes.

We developed computational de novo protein design methods capable of tackling several important areas of protein design. To disseminate these methods we present Protein WISDOM, an online tool for protein design (http://www.proteinwisdom.org). Starting from a structural template, design of monomeric proteins for increased stability and complexes for increased binding affinity can be performed.

AI in Research Literacy

Research literacy is the ability to locate, evaluate, interpret, and apply information responsibly and ethically. In academic contexts, this skill is essential for developing evidence-based arguments and informed conclusions. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools can support research literacy by helping with search strategies, summarizing open-access literature, and explaining technical concepts. However, these tools are most effective when students use them together with independent...
