Structural Protein Function

Strukturproteine sind eine Klasse von Proteinen, die die Form und Bewegung von Zellen unterstützen. Außerhalb der Zelle sind diese Proteine in strukturellen Körperteilen wie Knochen, Knorpel und Haut vorhanden. 
Kollagen, das am häufigsten vorkommende Protein in Säugetieren, ist ein Strukturprotein, das im ganzen Körper in der extrazellulären Matrix vorkommt. 
Dieses Protein windet sich zu einer Dreifachhelix, die zu länglichen Fibrillen polymerisiert, die sich dann weiter zu größeren Fasern zusammenfügen. Neben seinen vielen strukturellen Funktionen trägt es zur Zell- und Gewebeform bei.
Das Zytoskelett setzt sich überwiegend aus Strukturproteinen zusammen und bildet das Grundgerüst einer Zelle. Es enthält drei Haupttypen von Filamenten: Mikrofilamente, Zwischenfilamente und Mikrotubuli.
Aktin ist ein Strukturprotein, aus dem die Mikrofilamente bestehen. Dieses Protein polymerisiert sich selbst zu Filamenten und trägt zur Zellform, Organisation, Bewegung und Teilung bei.
Zwischenfilamente können je nach Zelltyp aus unterschiedlichen Proteinen zusammengesetzt sein. Zum Beispiel finden sich Keratin-Zwischenfilamente in Epithelzellen, während periphere Intermediärfilamente in den peripheren Neuronen zu finden sind. Die primäre strukturelle Funktion dieser Filamente besteht darin, die Zellen zu verstärken und sie in Geweben zu organisieren. 
Die Mikrotubuli bestehen aus einer Klasse von Strukturproteinen, die Tubuline genannt werden. Tubuline organisieren sich selbst zu Mikrotubuli, die zur Organisation des Zytoplasmas, einschließlich der Lage der Organellen, beitragen. 
Strukturproteine sind für die Gesundheit eines Organismus notwendig, und Mutationen in den Genen, die für diese Proteine kodieren, können zu verschiedenen Krankheiten führen, einschließlich Skelett- und Herz-Kreislauf-Anomalien.

Strukturproteine sind eine Kategorie von Proteinen, die für Funktionen verantwortlich sind, die von der Zellform und -bewegung bis zur Unterstützung wichtiger Strukturen wie Knochen, Knorpel, Haare und Muskeln reichen. Zu dieser Gruppe gehören Proteine wie Kollagen, Aktin, Myosin und Keratin.

Kollagen, das am häufigsten vorkommende Protein bei Säugetieren, findet sich im gesamten Körper. Im Bindegewebe, wie Haut, Bändern und Sehnen, bietet es Zugfestigkeit und Elastizität. In Knochen und Zähnen mineralisiert es, um hartes Gewebe zu bilden und trägt zur Tragfähigkeit bei. Neben der strukturellen Unterstützung kann Kollagen auch mit Zelloberflächenrezeptoren und anderen Zwischenmolekülen interagieren, um zelluläre Prozesse wie Wachstum und Migration zu regulieren, die Veränderungen in der Form von Zellen und Geweben umfassen.

Strukturproteine bilden das grundlegende Gerüst des Zellskeletts. Das Zytoskelett besteht aus drei Arten von Filamenten: Mikrofilamenten, intermediären Filamenten und Mikrotubuli, die jeweils aus verschiedenen Strukturproteinen bestehen. Das Mikrofilament entsteht, wenn sich Aktin zu langen, wiederholenden Strukturen selbstpolymerisiert. Diese Aktinfilamente tragen zur Zellform und -organisation bei; zusätzlich können Mikrofilamente auch zur Zellbewegung und -teilung beitragen, wenn sie zusammen mit Myosin wirken. Die Zusammensetzung der intermediären Filamente variiert je nach Zelltyp. Es gibt etwa 70 verschiedene Gene, die für verschiedene intermediäre Filamente kodieren. Intermediäre Filamente in Epithelzellen enthalten Keratin, periphere Neuronen enthalten Peripherin und das Sarkomer in Muskelzellen enthält Desmin. Die primäre strukturelle Funktion dieser Filamente ist es, Zellen zu verstärken und sie in Gewebe zu organisieren. Mikrotubuli bestehen aus Strukturproteinen, die Tubuline genannt werden. Structural proteins give cells and tissues shape, support, and strength. They help build bones, cartilage, hair, and muscles. Important examples include collagen, actin, myosin, and keratin.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in mammals. It is found throughout the body. In skin, ligaments, and tendons, collagen adds tensile strength and elasticity. In bones and teeth, it helps form hard, load-bearing tissue through mineralization.

Collagen also does more than provide support. It can interact with cell surface receptors and other molecules to help control cellular processes. These processes include growth and migration, which involve changes in cell and tissue shape.

Structural proteins also form the cell cytoskeleton, which is the internal framework of the cell. The cytoskeleton contains three kinds of filaments: microfilaments, intermediate filaments, and microtubules. Each filament type is built from different structural proteins.

Microfilaments form when actin self-polymerizes into long, repeating strands. These actin filaments help maintain cell shape and organization. They also work with myosin to support cell movement and cell division.

Intermediate filaments vary by cell type. Around 70 different genes code for these proteins. Epithelial cells contain keratin, peripheral neurons contain peripherin, and muscle cell sarcomeres contain desmin. Their main role is to reinforce cells and organize them into tissues.

Microtubules are made of tubulin proteins. Tubulins self-assemble into structures that help organize the cytoplasm and position organelles. Microtubules are also essential for mitosis and cell division. Because structural proteins are so widespread, mutations in their genes can cause serious effects. For example, collagen gene mutations can lead to osteogenesis imperfecta, which causes weak bones and connective tissue deformities, or Alport syndrome, which affects the kidneys, eyes, and ears.

EXPLANATION: Discussions of DNA in earlier grades have been limited to discussions of genes and the role of genes in the appearance and activities of an organism. Biology 1 represents a student's introduction to a molecular model of a DNA as well as the organization of DNA into genes and genes subsequently into chromosomes. Students should address interactions between genes in proteins which regulate both the shape and reproduction of DNA molecules. It is important to note that not all segments of DNA are transcribed for proteins. Portions of DNA are involved in regulating the expression of genes or affect the structure of the chromosomes (replication origin, centromeres, and telomeres).
