Behavioral Examination

Behavioral examination is the systematic observation, measurement, and interpretation of how an organism or group responds to internal and external conditions. Researchers identify behaviors, define observable criteria, and record their frequency, duration, sequence, or context during naturalistic observation or controlled testing. These measurements can reveal patterns in learning, communication, social interaction, motivation, and adaptation while helping distinguish consistent responses from situational variation. In behavioral science, careful examination supports hypothesis testing, evaluation of interventions, and comparisons across individuals, environments, or species, providing evidence for understanding behavior and its underlying influences.

Examine Chemoavoidance Behavior in Transgenic Worms Using Osmotic Avoidance Assay

2025

This video describes an osmotic avoidance assay to examine chemoavoidance behavior in a transgenic worm model. Avoidance behavior is tested in a plate in the presence of a high-osmotic barrier and chemoattractant. The worms with a functional loss of neurons get attracted by the chemoattractant, cross the high-osmotic barrier, and become paralyzed in the trap zone because of the anesthetic solution.

Behavioral Tasks for Examining Identity Recognition In Mice

2025

By pairing negatively or positively valenced experiences with individual social targets, we developed behavior tasks for examining the identity recognition of C57BL/6 mice. These tasks allow for the study of mechanisms of social memory of individual social targets in healthy and disease-related mouse models with impaired social cognition.

Source: Carmen Black, Matthew Goldenberg, and Jaideep Talwalkar; Yale School of Medicine The mental status exam is a clinical evaluation of emotional, perceptual, and cognitive functioning that spans both the fields of psychiatry and neurology. Developing skill in the psychiatric portions of the examination are important to describe salient aspects of the patient's mental state that may be observed during routine history and/or physical exam. Proficiency in the cognitive portions of this...
