Contingent Attentional Capture

Contingent attentional capture is a form of selective attention in which an irrelevant stimulus draws attention only when it matches features or properties that a person is currently seeking. It operates through attentional control settings: goals establish a search template, and stimuli sharing relevant features can trigger rapid orienting, whereas nonmatching distractors are more likely to be ignored. This interaction between top-down control and stimulus information helps explain why the same visual event disrupts performance in one task but not another. Studying contingent attentional capture informs models of visual search, distractor interference, and cognitive control in everyday behavior and laboratory research.

The Attentional Blink

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University In order for recognition of a certain stimulus to take place, visual attention needs to be directed towards said stimulus. To the earliest parts of the visual system, objects are not objects, they are collections of visual features-lines, corners, changes in texture, color, and light. Attention is the resource that is necessary for later processing in order to recognize what a given bundle of features adds up to. This makes...

Contingency Table

2023

A contingency table provides a way of portraying data that can facilitate calculating probabilities. It is a method of displaying a frequency distribution as a table with rows and columns to show how two variables may be dependent (contingent) upon each other; The table helps determine conditional probabilities quite quickly and can help systematically organize, analyze and quantify data. The table displays sample values concerning two variables that may be dependent or contingent on one...

We present development of a gaze-contingent display framework designed for perceptual and oculomotor research simulating central vision loss. This framework is particularly adaptable for studying compensatory behavioral and oculomotor strategies in individuals experiencing both simulated and pathological central vision loss.

Contingent Liabilities

Companies often face uncertain situations that could result in future financial obligations. These are known as contingent liabilities—potential debts dependent on the outcome of future events. While not always recorded on the balance sheet, contingent liabilities are essential for financial transparency and risk management.Recognition and Disclosure CriteriaContingent liabilities are recognized only if the obligation is probable and the amount can be reasonably estimated. If either condition...
