Grating Acuity

Grating acuity is the ability to distinguish alternating light and dark bands, providing a measure of spatial vision and visual resolution. It is typically assessed by presenting gratings that vary in stripe width, or spatial frequency, and identifying the finest pattern an observer can reliably resolve; performance depends on optical focus, retinal sampling, contrast sensitivity, and neural processing. In behavioral research, grating acuity tests quantify visual capacity in humans and animals without requiring recognition of complex objects. The measure supports studies of development, aging, sensory impairment, learning, and species differences in visual behavior.

The measurement protocol and data analysis procedure are given for obtaining transverse coherence of a synchrotron radiation X-ray source along four directions simultaneously using a single 2-D checkerboard phase grating. This simple technique can be applied for complete transverse coherence characterization of X-ray sources and X-ray optics.

A novel motion-based acuity test that allows the assessment of central and peripheral visual processing in low-vision and healthy individuals, along with goggles limiting peripheral vision compatible with MRI protocols, are described here. This method offers a comprehensive vision assessment for functional impairments and dysfunctions of the visual system.
