Middle Cerebral Artery Stroke

Middle cerebral artery stroke is an ischemic or hemorrhagic injury affecting the brain regions supplied by the middle cerebral artery, a major vessel involved in movement, sensation, language, and behavior. Ischemic strokes occur when a clot or narrowed artery reduces blood flow, depriving neurons of oxygen and causing tissue damage; hemorrhagic strokes result from vessel rupture and bleeding. Depending on lesion location and severity, patients may develop aphasia, neglect, impaired attention, emotional changes, or difficulties with decision-making and social behavior. Studying these outcomes helps researchers connect brain regions with behavioral functions and guides neurological assessment, rehabilitation, and recovery planning.

Various murine models of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) are widely used in experimental brain research. Here, we demonstrate the model of transcranial permanent distal MCAO which produces consistent cortical infarction of a size corresponding to damage imposed by the majority of human ischemic strokes.

Inducing Ischemic Stroke via Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion Using a Thread Bolt

This video demonstrates the process of inducing ischemic stroke in a rat model by occluding the middle cerebral artery (MCA) using a thread bolt. The procedure involves ligating the carotid arteries, inserting a thread bolt into the external carotid artery, and blocking blood flow from the MCA to the brain, leading to neuronal death and mimicking an ischemic stroke.

Cerebral perfusion monitoring has been demonstrated to improve accuracy in ischemic stroke models. Technical difficulties often limit the use of this essential tool for cerebrovascular research. In this video, an optimized system is shown to obtain a single or multi-site hemodynamic monitoring during intraluminal middle cerebral artery occlusion in rats.

In order to understand the pathophysiology of stroke, it is important to use reliable models. This paper will describe one of the most frequently used stroke models in mice, termed the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) model (also termed the intraluminal filament or suture model) with reperfusion.
