3d Osteocyte Models

3D osteocyte models are engineered laboratory systems that recreate the three-dimensional environment in which osteocytes, the primary mechanosensory cells of bone, develop and function. By embedding osteocytes or osteocyte-like cells within mineralized matrices, hydrogels, or porous scaffolds and applying controlled mechanical loading or fluid flow, these models simulate cell-matrix interactions and mechanotransduction more closely than conventional two-dimensional cultures. In bioengineering, they support studies of bone remodeling, cellular responses to mechanical stimuli, and communication with other bone cells. They also provide platforms for investigating skeletal disease, evaluating biomaterials and therapeutics, and designing more predictive approaches to bone regeneration.
