Bhi Urea Medium

BHI Urea Medium is a nutrient-rich microbiological medium used to detect urease activity in cultured microorganisms, supporting biochemical identification and characterization. Brain heart infusion supplies peptides and other growth factors, while urea serves as the substrate for urease; when hydrolyzed, it produces ammonia, increases the medium’s pH, and triggers a phenol red color change from yellow to pink or red. This assay helps distinguish urease-producing bacteria from nonproducers and can complement colony morphology, microscopy, and other biochemical tests. In bioengineering and microbial research, the medium supports strain screening, diagnostic workflows, and studies of microbial metabolism.

Urea Cycle

2025

The urea cycle describes how liver cells convert ammonia to urea. Ammonia is a toxic waste product of protein catabolism. Land animals must convert ammonia into the less toxic urea which can be safely eliminated by the kidneys through urine. Marine animals excrete ammonia directly, and the surrounding water dilutes the ammonia to safe levels. There are five basic steps in the urea cycle: the conversion of ammonia (NH3) to carbamoyl phosphate the introduction of ornithine in the...

Removal of Branched and Cyclic Compounds by Urea Adduction for Uk'37 Paleothermometry

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst As mentioned in previous videos, the product of an organic solvent extraction, a total lipid extract (TLE), is often a complex mixture of hundreds, if not thousands, of different compounds. The researcher is often only interested in a handful of compounds. In the case of our two organic paleothermometers (Uk'37 and MBT/CBT), the interest is in only 6 compounds (2 alkenones and 4 isoprenoidal glycerol dialkyl glycerol...

Organ Conditioned Medium: Generating Medium from Harvested Organ Cells for Metastatic Cancer Studies

2023

This video describes a method of generating an organ conditioned medium derived from the mouse liver. This model system can be used to identify and study organ-derived soluble factors and their effects on the organ tropism and metastatic behavior of cancer cells.
