Drosophila Organs

Drosophila organs are the specialized tissues and body structures of the fruit fly, a genetically tractable model used to study how biological form and function arise. Their development is governed by conserved signaling pathways, gene regulatory networks, and cell-cell interactions that organize cells into structures such as the gut, nervous system, muscle, and imaginal discs. In bioengineering, these organs provide experimentally accessible systems for linking genes to tissue mechanics, modeling disease, testing biomaterials or genetic interventions, and designing principles for engineered tissues. Their small size, rapid life cycle, and powerful genetic tools support reproducible studies of organ development, regeneration, and function.

We describe a protocol for dissection, fixation, and immunostaining of steroidogenic organs in Drosophila larvae and adult females to study steroid hormone biosynthesis and its regulatory mechanism. In addition to steroidogenic organs, we visualize the innervation of steroidogenic organs as well as steroidogenic target cells such as germline stem cells.

Mendelian Genetics Evolution is caused by changes in the genetic composition of populations. In the field of population genetics, scientists model this process as changes in the frequency of alleles at individual genetic loci. This simple representation of how evolution occurs dates to Gregor Mendel’s analysis of trait inheritance patterns in pea plants, first presented in 1865. Mendel determined, using rigorous collection of data, that noticeable traits are controlled by two alleles of each...

2023

Drosophila melanogaster, also known as the fruit fly, is a powerful model organism widely used in biological research that has made significant contributions to the greater scientific community over the last century. First, this video introduces the fruit fly as an organism, including its physical characteristics, life cycle, environment, and diet. Next, the reasons why fruit flies make an excellent model organism are discussed. For example, fruit flies are inexpensive to maintain in the...
