Electrospray Solution

An electrospray solution is a liquid feed containing dissolved or suspended material that is atomized into electrically charged droplets for controlled deposition, particle formation, or delivery. In an electric field, charge accumulates at the liquid surface near a capillary; when electrical forces overcome surface tension, a Taylor cone forms and emits a fine jet that breaks into droplets, while solvent evaporation concentrates the payload. In bioengineering, adjusting solution properties such as conductivity, viscosity, concentration, and solvent composition helps control droplet size and product morphology. This tunability supports cell encapsulation, biomaterial coating, drug delivery, and fabrication of engineered particles and fibers.

We describe a new quantitative lipidomics method for identifying numerous lipid species in yeast using survey-scan electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI/MS). This method exceeds currently available methods for lipid identification and quantification in the ability to resolve various molecular forms of lipids, sensitivity, and speed.

A mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) source operated at atmospheric pressure was developed by coupling mid-infrared laser desorption and electrospray post-ionization. Exogenous ice matrix was used as the energy-absorbing matrix to facilitate resonant desorption of tissue-related material. This manuscript provides a step-by-step protocol for performing IR-MALDESI MSI of whole-body neonatal mouse.
