Hot Press Consolidation

Hot press consolidation is a materials-processing technique that uses simultaneous heat and pressure to transform powders or particulate preforms into dense, shaped solids, making it useful for engineering biomaterials with controlled structure and properties. During processing, material is confined in a die and heated while uniaxial load promotes particle rearrangement, plastic deformation, and diffusion; these mechanisms reduce pore volume and strengthen interparticle bonds. In bioengineering, hot press consolidation supports fabrication of dense bioceramic and composite components for biomedical research, where tailored density, mechanical integrity, and phase stability can influence performance and compatibility.

2023

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Working with extreme temperatures, both high and low, is an integral part of many laboratory operations. For many, mentioning a laboratory instantly evokes the mental picture of a Bunsen burner. Bunsen burners and hot plates are used extensively in small and large operations in research laboratories and industries, thus making it necessary for all users to be aware of their safe handling...

Hot Wire Anemometry

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI Hot-wire anemometers have a very short time-response, which makes them ideal to measure rapidly fluctuating phenomena such as turbulent flows. The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the use of hot-wire anemometry.

2014

We present a protocol used to discover an interactive effect between sleep and cortisol on memory consolidation, particularly for negative arousing images. Specifically, the experimental design utilizes eye tracking, salivary cortisol analysis, and behavioral memory testing – methods that can be used with both healthy and clinical participants.

Hot Weather Concreting

2024

Concreting at elevated temperatures accelerates the hydration process, leading to quicker setting but potentially reducing the long-term strength of the concrete structure. Additionally, low air humidity fosters rapid moisture loss from the concrete, resulting in reduced workability, pronounced plastic shrinkage, and a higher likelihood of crazing. Mitigating the heat increase in concrete can be economically achieved by shading aggregate stockpiles to prevent heating from solar radiation,...
