Monolayer Protected Clusters

Monolayer protected clusters (MPCs) are ultrasmall metal nanoparticles whose surfaces are coated by an organized single layer of ligands, stabilizing clusters that contain only a few to hundreds of atoms. Typically, thiol-containing molecules bind strongly to a gold or silver core, forming a protective shell that limits aggregation while tuning solubility, charge, optical behavior, and chemical reactivity. In bioengineering, ligand composition and terminal functional groups can be selected to promote water dispersibility, biomolecule attachment, and interactions with cells or tissues. These features support sensitive biosensors, fluorescence and imaging probes, targeted delivery platforms, and fundamental studies of nanoscale structure-property relationships.

We present a technique that allows the spatial separation of different conformers or clusters present in a molecular beam. An electrostatic deflector is used to separate species by their mass-to-dipole moment ratio, leading to the production of gas-phase ensembles of a single conformer or cluster stoichiometry.
