Spatiotemporal Data Extraction

Spatiotemporal data extraction is the process of identifying, organizing, and quantifying information that changes across both location and time, allowing biological systems to be studied as dynamic rather than static phenomena. It combines spatial coordinates with timestamps, then uses segmentation, feature detection, and tracking to isolate structures, events, and trajectories from imaging or sensor datasets. In bioengineering, these measurements can characterize cell migration, tissue deformation, transport, and changing biomaterial behavior. Reliable extraction supports quantitative modeling, system comparison, and data-driven design while revealing how biological processes unfold within their physical context.

2016

Recently available video recording and spatiotemporal mapping (STmap) techniques make it possible to visualize and quantify both propagating and mixing patterns of intestinal motility. The goal of this protocol is to explain the generation and analysis of STmaps using the GastroIntestinal Motility Monitoring (GIMM) system.

This article describes a video imaging technique and high-resolution spatiotemporal mapping to identify changes in the neural regulation of colonic motility in adult mice. Subtle effects on gastrointestinal (GI) function can be detected using this approach in isolated tissue preparations to advance our understanding of GI disease.

Extracting Visual Evoked Potentials from EEG Data Recorded During fMRI-guided Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

2014

This paper describes a method for collecting and analyzing electroencephalography (EEG) data during concurrent transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) guided by activations revealed with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). A method for TMS artifact removal and extraction of event related potentials is described as well as considerations in paradigm design and experimental setup.
