Support Span

Support span is the maximum distance an engineered or biological structure can bridge between supporting points while maintaining adequate stability, strength, and function. In bioengineering, it depends on material stiffness, geometry, boundary conditions, load distribution, and the structure’s resistance to bending, buckling, and deformation; increasing the span generally increases mechanical demands on the supporting material. Evaluating support span helps guide the design of tissue-engineering scaffolds, prosthetic components, biomedical devices, and bioprinted constructs, where insufficient support can compromise structural integrity or cell and tissue performance. This concept links mechanical design with the functional requirements of biological systems.

Measuring Verbal Working Memory Span

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Why is it relatively hard to remember everything on a shopping list if it includes more than just a handful of items? Why is it possible to remember a phone number that one just heard, but not two or three phone numbers at once? Why is it difficult to remember names when several new people are introduced at the same time? The answer has to do with the fact that over short-durations people rely on a specialized memory system...

Spanning Openings in Brick Walls

2024

In brick wall construction, supporting structures are crucial for openings like windows and doors to maintain the integrity and support the weight of the wall above. These supports include lintels, corbels, and arches, each serving specific structural purposes. Lintels are primary supports used to span openings and can be crafted from materials such as reinforced concrete, steel-reinforced brick masonry, or simple steel angles. These are straightforward to install and are typically concealed...

Self-Help Support Groups

Self-help support groups are voluntary, community-based organizations that provide a platform for individuals with shared concerns to exchange support, insights, and practical strategies for coping with life challenges. Typically led by group members or paraprofessionals, these groups form a cornerstone of mental health care, especially in reaching populations that are underserved by traditional healthcare systems. Accessibility and Cost-Effectiveness One of the primary strengths of self-help...

Principles of the Life-Span Developmental Approach: Part 2

2026

Paul B. Baltes and colleagues described several key principles of lifespan development to explain how individuals change from childhood through late adulthood. These principles focus on the allocation of personal resources, the capacity for change, and the influence of historical and cultural environments. They show that development can change but is also limited by individual and environmental conditions.Development Involves Changing Resource AllocationsAcross the lifespan, individuals...
