Adaptive Pigment Regulation

Adaptive Pigment Regulation is a biological process in which organisms adjust the amount, distribution, or composition of pigments in response to environmental and physiological cues. It can produce camouflage, UV protection, or visual signals, linking cellular pigment control to survival and communication. In many animals, neural or hormonal signals regulate chromatophore activity, including the synthesis of pigment and the movement of pigment-containing organelles within cells, which rapidly changes body coloration. Studying this regulation helps explain adaptation, predator-prey interactions, and mate choice, while informing research on cellular signaling, environmental responses, and bioinspired materials that dynamically alter color.

2022

Regulators of melanocyte functions govern visible differences in the pigmentation outcome. Deciphering the molecular function of the candidate pigmentation gene poses a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate the use of a zebrafish model system to identify candidates and classify them into regulators of melanin content and melanocyte number.
