Aeromonas Infection Model

An Aeromonas infection model is an experimental system used to study how Aeromonas bacteria interact with host organisms and cause disease. These models recreate infection under controlled conditions, allowing researchers to examine bacterial colonization, virulence factors, host immune responses, tissue damage, and disease progression. Depending on the research question, investigators may use cultured cells, aquatic animals, or other laboratory hosts to assess pathogen behavior and host susceptibility. Aeromonas infection models support research in microbiology, immunology, ecology, and antimicrobial development by helping evaluate disease mechanisms, compare bacterial strains, and test potential treatments or preventive strategies.

Source: Chen, Y. et. al., Evaluating Virulence and Pathogenesis of Aeromonas Infection in a Caenorhabditis elegans Model. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates a muscle necrosis assay in C. elegans (Caenorhabditis elegans) using pathogenic Aeromonas strains. By feeding green fluorescent protein (GFP)-expressing worms on Aeromonas-seeded plates, the assay models bacterial infection and reveals tissue damage through fluorescence imaging. The progressive loss of muscle structure and GFP...

This protocol describes the use of sump swabs and sludge analysis of zebrafish systems, which leads to increased detection compared to the sole use of sentinels to detect pathogens such as Aeromonas hydrophila, Mycobacterium spp., and Pseudocapillaria tomentosa. A system to monitor P. tomentosa eggs in quarantine is also proposed.

Use of Galleria mellonella as a Model Organism to Study Legionella pneumophila Infection

The larva of the wax moth Galleria mellonella was recently established as an in vivo model to study Legionella pneumophila infection. Here, we demonstrate fundamental techniques to characterize the pathogenesis of Legionella in the larvae, including inoculation, measurement of bacterial virulence and replication as well as extraction and analysis of infected hemocytes.
