Benchtop Incubator

A benchtop incubator is a compact laboratory device that maintains controlled environmental conditions for growing, maintaining, or testing biological samples. A thermostat and temperature sensor regulate heating, while internal air circulation promotes uniform conditions; specialized models may also control humidity or carbon dioxide to support cell culture. In biology, benchtop incubators are used for microbial cultivation, tissue and cell culture, biochemical assays, and controlled sample treatment. Their small footprint and precise regulation make them useful for teaching laboratories, routine experiments, and research workflows that require reproducible growth conditions without a large chamber.

Fermentors are used to increase culture yield and productivity of bioengineered cells. After screening multiple microbial or animal cell culture candidates in shake flasks, the next logical step is to increase the selected culture’s biomass with the fermentor. This video demonstrates the setup and operation of a typical benchtop bioreactor system.

Laboratory soil warming experiments usually employ two or more constant temperatures in multiple chambers. By presenting a sophisticated environmental chamber, we provide an accurate temperature control method to imitate the magnitude and amplitude of in situ soil temperature and improve the experimental design of soil incubation studies.

Responding for food or drug-paired cues increases over the course of a period of abstinence and this may relate to an increased susceptibility to relapse behaviors. Here we detail a procedure for evaluating this "incubation of craving" in rats that have self-administered sucrose.

Rapid Viscoelastic Characterization of Airway Mucus Using a Benchtop Rheometer

The viscoelastic properties of mucus play a critical role in mucociliary clearance. However, traditional mucus rheological techniques require complex and time-consuming approaches. This study provides a detailed protocol for the use of a benchtop rheometer that can rapidly and reliably perform viscoelastic measurements.

A Technique for the Prolonged Incubation of Neuronal Tissue of the Retina

2025

This video demonstrates a method for prolonged incubation of neuronal tissue of the retina. Eyecups containing retina are obtained from a mouse eye; the inner limiting membrane (ILM) is enzymatically digested to expose the neuronal cells of the retina, and either the treated eyecup or the isolated retina is transferred to a specialized incubator for prolonged incubation at a low temperature.
