Capnography Oximetry

Capnography oximetry is a noninvasive approach to monitoring ventilation and oxygenation by measuring exhaled carbon dioxide and blood oxygen saturation. Capnography uses infrared absorption to detect CO2 concentration in exhaled gas and displays it as a time-based waveform, while pulse oximetry compares the absorption of red and infrared light through tissue to estimate arterial oxygen saturation. Together, these measurements reveal changes in respiratory rate, airway patency, ventilation, and oxygenation, often before clinical deterioration becomes apparent. In biology and biomedical research, this combined monitoring supports respiratory physiology studies, anesthesia and sedation monitoring, critical care, and evaluation of pulmonary function and gas exchange.

2025

In this video, we demonstrate a multisystem monitoring method to evaluate neurological and cardiorespiratory abnormalities during intravenous injection of a seizure-inducing drug. The simultaneous monitoring of video EEG, ECG, oximetry, and capnography parameters helps to understand the real-time physiological changes associated with epileptic seizures.

Pulse Oximetry

2025

Pulse oximetry, or SpO2, is a non-invasive method for continuously monitoring arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2). This procedure involves attaching a probe or sensor to the patient's fingertip, forehead, earlobe, or nose bridge. The sensor works by detecting changes in oxygen saturation levels through light signals generated by the oximeter and reflected by the pulsing blood under the probe. Purpose Average SpO2 values are greater than 95%. If the readings fall below 90%, it indicates that...

The goal of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of capnography sampling lines used in conjunction with a portable bedside capnography monitor. Sampling lines from 7 manufacturers were evaluated for tensile strength, rise time, and ETCO2 accuracy as a function of respiratory rate or supplemental oxygen flow rate.

Combining Volumetric Capnography And Barometric Plethysmography To Measure The Lung Structure-function Relationship

Here, we describe two measures of pulmonary function – barometric plethysmography, which allows the measurement of lung volume, and volumetric capnography, a tool to measure the anatomic dead space and airways uniformity. These techniques may be used independently or combined to assess airways function at different lung volumes.
