Drosophila Ovary Infection

Drosophila ovary infection is the colonization of fruit fly ovarian tissue by microbial pathogens, providing a tractable model for studying interactions between infection, reproduction, and host defense. Pathogens can reach the ovary through the hemolymph or reproductive tract, where they encounter follicle cells and germline tissues that activate innate immune responses and may disrupt oogenesis. Research on this process examines how infection changes ovarian function, pathogen tissue tropism, and the possibility of transmission from mothers to offspring. These studies help clarify reproductive immunity and host-pathogen dynamics while supporting broader investigations of antimicrobial defenses, fertility, and disease transmission.

How niches and stem cells form during development is an important question with practical implications. In the Drosophila ovary, germ line stem cells and their somatic niches form during larval development. This video demonstrates how to dissect, stain and mount female gonads from late third instar (LL3) Drosophila larvae.

Drosophila oogenesis continues to be exceptionally useful in the study of mitochondrial proliferation and inheritance. This manuscript describes a detailed protocol used to label the replicating mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in Drosophila adult ovaries with 5-ethynyl-2´-deoxyuridine (EdU), which facilitates uncovering mechanisms associated with mitochondrial inheritance that were previously debatable.
