Escape Platform

An escape platform is a designated refuge that allows an organism to end exposure to an aversive environment or stimulus, making it useful for measuring behavior in biological research. In tasks such as water-maze assays, an animal uses visual, spatial, or other environmental cues to locate the platform, and reaching it terminates the escape trial. Researchers assess outcomes including escape latency, path length, search strategy, and retention across repeated trials. These measurements help evaluate spatial learning, memory, motivation, sensory and motor function, and behavioral effects of genetic, pharmacological, or neurological interventions.

Genetically encoded optogenetic tools enable noninvasive manipulation of specific neurons in the Drosophila brain. Such tools can identify neurons whose activation is sufficient to elicit or suppress particular behaviors. Here we present a method for activating Channelrhodopsin2 that is expressed in targeted neurons in freely walking flies.

Escape Velocity

2025

The escape velocity of an object is defined as the minimum initial velocity that it requires to escape the surface of another object to which it is gravitationally bound and never to return. For example, what would be the minimum velocity at which a satellite should be launched from the Earth's surface such that it just escapes the Earth's gravitational field? To calculate the escape velocity, it is assumed that no energy is lost to any frictional forces. In practice, a satellite launched from...

Generation of Influenza Virus Escape Variants against Neutralizing Antibodies

2025

This video demonstrates a technique for generating escape variants of neutralizing influenza virus monoclonal antibodies. Antibody-neutralized virus suspension is injected into embryonated chicken eggs to propagate escape variants selectively. This results in a virus population predominantly of escape variants, confirmed via a Hemagglutination assay.

A Treatment Package without Escape Extinction to Address Food Selectivity

Feeding difficulties are a common problem for children with developmental disorders, including autism, and behavioral interventions often include escape extinction. Recent research has begun to evaluate treatments that do not include escape extinction. This manuscript describes a multicomponent treatment package that does not use escape extinction to treat feeding difficulties.

Escape Velocities of Gases

To escape the Earth's gravity, an object near the top of the atmosphere at an altitude of 100 km must travel away from Earth at 11.1 km/s. This speed is called the escape velocity. The temperature at which gas molecules attain the rms speed, which is equal to the escape velocity, can be estimated by using the equation for the average kinetic energy of the gas molecules. According to the kinetic theory of gas, the average kinetic energy of the gas molecules is proportional to its temperature.
