Florida Panthers

The Florida panther is a rare population of pumas native to southern Florida and an important predator in the region’s ecosystems. As a carnivorous mammal, it helps shape prey populations while relying on extensive, connected habitats for hunting, movement, and reproduction; habitat loss and fragmentation can restrict gene flow and reduce genetic diversity. Biologists study Florida panthers through field observations, radio telemetry, population surveys, and genetic monitoring to assess health, behavior, and population size. These data guide habitat protection, wildlife corridors, and genetic-management strategies, supporting recovery of this endangered population and demonstrating how conservation biology can protect both a species and its ecosystem.

Pouring and Running a Protein Gel by reusing Commercial Cassettes

Our protocol demonstrates how to pour multiple protein gels at a time by recycling Invitrogen Nupage Novex minigel cassettes, and inexpensive materials purchased at a home improvement store. This economical and streamlined method includes a way to store the gels at 4°C for a few weeks. By re-using the plastic gel cassettes from commercially available gels, labs that run frequent protein gels can save significant costs and help the environment.

A Push-pull Protocol to Reduce Colonization of Bird Nest Boxes by Honey Bees

Preventing colonization of bird nest boxes by invasive Africanized honey bees is important for conservation efforts of nest-site limited birds. We provide an integrated pest management approach to "push" bees away from nest boxes with a repellant insecticide, permethrin, and "pull" them toward pheromone baited swarm traps.

This protocol describes a rapid and simplified in situ hybridization method ideal forparaformaldehyde-prefixed brain, thus reducing the need for prolonged complex steps while using fresh frozen tissues. The method is validated using the identification of the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor gene htr2a in rats.
