Greater Trochanter

The greater trochanter is a large bony projection on the lateral side of the proximal femur that serves as an important attachment site and surface landmark around the hip. Its irregular shape and interconnected muscle and tendon attachments, including those of the gluteal muscles and other hip stabilizers, help generate movement and maintain alignment of the femoral head within the hip joint. In biology and clinical research, the greater trochanter is used to study hip anatomy, gait, muscle function, and skeletal development. Its position also guides physical examination, imaging interpretation, orthopedic procedures, and investigation of injuries such as fractures or trochanteric pain syndromes.

Source: Yetsa Tuakli-Wosornu1,2, Jaideep Talwalkar1; 1Yale School of Medicine, 2University of Pittsburgh In addition to the regular checks of a physical exam, examinations for patients who use wheelchairs should be adapted to address their specific needs. This ensures that the patient's mobility, injury risk, and quality of life are not threatened by extended periods of sitting, potentially without proper weight shifts. Such examination needs healthcare providers that understand these...

Multimodal Bioluminescent and Positronic-emission Tomography/Computational Tomography Imaging of Multiple Myeloma Bone Marrow Xenografts in NOG Mice

Here we use bioluminescent, X-ray, and positron-emission tomography/computed tomography imaging to study how inhibiting mTOR activity impacts bone marrow-engrafted myeloma tumors in a xenograft model. This allows for physiologically relevant, non-invasive, and multimodal analyses of the anti-myeloma effect of therapies targeting bone marrow-engrafted myeloma tumors in vivo.

Immuno-fluorescence Assay of Leptospiral Surface-exposed Proteins

An efficient method to assess surface-exposure of leptospiral proteins is described. The method is specifically designed to avoid disruption of the fragile outer membrane of leptospiral cells. This technique requires employment of several negative controls to assess the integrity of the outer membrane and specificity of antibody reaction.
