Grow Light

A grow light is an artificial light source designed to support plant growth when sunlight is insufficient, making it important for indoor cultivation and controlled biological studies. It works by providing wavelengths that plant pigments absorb for photosynthesis, while light intensity, duration, and spectrum influence processes such as leaf development, flowering, and photoperiodic responses. Light-emitting diode (LED) systems can deliver targeted spectra and adjustable exposure with relatively high energy efficiency. In biology, grow lights help researchers control environmental conditions, maintain laboratory plants, produce seedlings year-round, and study how light regulates plant form, physiology, and development.

This protocol shows a plant sample preparation method for light-sheet microscopy. The setup is characterized by mounting the plant vertically on the surface of a gel and letting it grow in controlled bright conditions. This allows long-term observation of plant organ development in standardized conditions.

2023

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Jimmy Franco - Merrimack College X-ray crystallography is a method commonly used to determine the spatial arrangement of atoms in a crystalline solid, which allows for the determination of the three-dimensional shape of a molecule or complex. Determining the three-dimensional structure of a compound is of particular importance, since a compound's structure and function are intimately related. Information about a compound's structure is often used to explain its...

Here we present a protocol for controlled production of protein microcrystals. The process uses an automated device allowing controlled manipulation of several crystallization parameters. The protein crystallization is carried-out by controlled and automated addition of crystallization solutions while monitoring and investigating the radius distribution of particles in the crystallization droplet.

Source: Le Nagard, L., et al. Growing Magnetotactic Bacteria of the Genus Magnetospirillum: Strains MSR-1, AMB-1 and MS-1. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates how to culture Magnetospirillum bacteria under microaerobic conditions using both liquid and semi-solid media. It highlights the formation of a visible bacterial band at the oxic-anoxic interface and its upward migration as oxygen is depleted. The video also shows how to assess magnetotactic behavior by observing directional...
