Hemocytometer

A hemocytometer is a specialized microscope slide used to count cells or other microscopic particles in a precisely defined volume, making it important for quantifying biological samples. Its etched grid and calibrated chamber depth create a known volume, so researchers count cells within selected squares under a microscope and calculate concentration from the cell number, dilution factor, and sampled volume. In biology, hemocytometers support cell culture maintenance, blood cell analysis, yeast or bacterial estimation, and viability measurements when combined with appropriate stains. Although manual and time-consuming, this method provides a direct, low-cost reference for evaluating automated counting systems and experimental samples.

2023

The Drosophila hemolymph serves as both blood and interstitial fluid, circulating throughout the body during the larva and adult stages. This video describes a protocol to collect larval hemolymph in order to quantify the circulating cells.

Investigating the Function of Coronin A in the Early Starvation Response of Dictyostelium discoideum by Aggregation Assays

The social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum undergoes a developmental transition into a multicellular organism when starved. The evolutionary conserved protein coronin A plays a crucial role in the initiation of development. Using aggregation assays as our main method, we aim to elucidate the role of coronin A in early development.
