Nitrous Oxide Emissions

Nitrous oxide emissions are releases of N₂O, a long-lived greenhouse gas produced by natural and human-driven nitrogen cycling, with major implications for climate and atmospheric chemistry. In biology, soil and aquatic microorganisms generate N₂O mainly during nitrification, which oxidizes ammonium, and denitrification, which reduces nitrate under oxygen-limited conditions; incomplete denitrification can leave N₂O as an end product. Agricultural fertilization, manure management, and changes in soil moisture and oxygen availability influence these emissions. Measuring and reducing N₂O helps clarify microbial ecosystem function, improve nitrogen-use efficiency, limit climate warming, and protect stratospheric ozone.

Metal Flame Emission Flame testing is an analytical technique where a sample is placed in a flame, and the characteristic flame color is used to identify the substance. Each element has a characteristic light emission when placed into a flame, meaning each element produces a unique color. This phenomenon is used in fireworks displays, where the color of the fireworks corresponds to a specific characteristic of a metal. The emission of colored light from a burning sample is the direct result of...

Simultaneous magnetoencephalography and electroencephalography provides a useful tool to search for common and distinct macro-scale mechanisms of reductions in consciousness induced by different anesthetics. This paper illustrates the empirical methods underlying the recording of such data from healthy humans during N-Methyl-D-Aspartate-(NMDA)-receptor-antagonist-based anesthesia during inhalation of nitrous oxide and xenon.

Emission Spectra

2020

When solids, liquids, or condensed gases are heated sufficiently, they radiate some of the excess energy as light. Photons produced in this manner have a range of energies, and thereby produce a continuous spectrum in which an unbroken series of wavelengths is present. In contrast to continuous spectra, light can also occur as discrete or line spectra having very narrow linewidths interspersed throughout the spectral regions. Exciting a gas at low partial pressure using an electrical current,...

The overall goal of this protocol is to measure greenhouse gas emissions from paddy fields using the static closed chamber technique. The measurement system needs specific adjustments due to the presence of both a permanent water layer in the field and of the plants within the chamber headspace.
