Beta-oxidation Pathway

The beta-oxidation pathway is a central metabolic process that breaks down fatty acids to provide energy for cells, especially during fasting, prolonged exercise, or limited glucose availability. After activation to fatty acyl-CoA, long-chain fatty acids enter mitochondria through the carnitine shuttle, where repeated cycles of oxidation, hydration, oxidation, and thiolysis remove two-carbon units as acetyl-CoA. Each cycle also produces NADH and FADH2, which transfer electrons to the electron transport chain to support ATP synthesis. Studying beta-oxidation helps explain energy balance, metabolic adaptation, and disorders involving fatty-acid transport or mitochondrial energy production.

Nitric Oxide Signaling Pathway

2023

Nitric oxide (NO), an inorganic gas, acts as a potent second messenger in most animal and plant tissues. NO diffuses out of the cells that produce it and enters the neighboring cells to generate a downstream response. NO synthase (NOS) catalyzes NO production by the deamination of the amino acid arginine. There are three isoforms of NOS. Endothelial cells have endothelial NOS (eNOS), nerve and muscle cells have neuronal NOS (nNOS), and macrophages produce inducible NOS (iNOS) upon exposure to...

Beta

2024

Beta is a crucial metric in finance used to assess an investment's risk and expected return relative to the overall market. It is calculated as the slope of the line in a scatterplot that compares the returns of an individual stock to the returns of the market benchmark, typically represented by a broad market index. Beta quantifies how much a stock's price moves in response to market movements, providing insight into its volatility and systematic risk. A beta of one indicates that the stock's...

Oxidation Numbers

2020

In redox reactions, the transfer of electrons occurs between reacting species. Electron transfer is described by a hypothetical number called the oxidation number (or oxidation state). It represents the effective charge of an atom or element, which is assigned using a set of rules. Oxidation Number (Oxidation State) In the case of an ionic compound, oxidation numbers are assigned based on the number of electrons transferred between reacting species. For example, in the formation of calcium...

Cell-mediated lymphocytotoxicity (CML) assays can be used to test autoreactive responses and study mechanisms of cell death in vitro. However, using live-cell confocal microscopic imaging techniques with fluorescent dyes, the type and kinetics of cell death as well as the pathways utilized can be studied in greater detail.
