Osmotic Regulation

Osmotic regulation is the biological control of water and dissolved-solute concentrations that maintains stable conditions within cells and organisms. It operates through osmosis, in which water moves across selectively permeable membranes toward the region with higher effective solute concentration, while transport proteins, ion pumps, and regulated excretion adjust internal solute levels. In biology, this process helps cells avoid swelling or dehydration and enables organisms to function in changing environments, from freshwater and marine habitats to terrestrial systems. Studying osmotic regulation clarifies how kidneys, specialized epithelial tissues, and cellular signaling maintain homeostasis and respond to environmental stress.

Osmosis and Osmotic Pressure of Solutions

A number of natural and synthetic materials exhibit selective permeation, meaning that only molecules or ions of a certain size, shape, polarity, charge, and so forth, are capable of passing through (permeating) the material. Biological cell membranes provide elegant examples of selective permeation in nature, while dialysis tubing used to remove metabolic wastes from blood is a more simplistic technological example. Regardless of how they may be fabricated, these materials are generally...

Inducing the Entry of Third Stage Dispersal Juveniles of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus into Cryptobiosis Through Osmotic Regulation

2024

The present protocol describes a method for inducing the dispersal of third-stage juveniles (pre-dauer juveniles, JⅢ) of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus into cryptobiosis through osmotic regulation of potassium chloride (KCl) ions. This method can provide technical support for research on the stress resistance mechanisms of B. xylophilus.

Osmotic Pressure

Osmosis is a process where solvent molecules move toward a solution through a semipermeable membrane. As the solution dilutes due to the entry of solvent, it expands. This expansion increases the hydrostatic pressure of the solution. When the hydrostatic pressure equals the osmotic pressure, osmosis stops.Osmotic pressure, denoted by Π, is the minimum pressure needed to prevent the solvent from passing into the solution by osmosis. The van 't Hoff equation calculates the osmotic pressure of an...

Examine Chemoavoidance Behavior in Transgenic Worms Using Osmotic Avoidance Assay

2025

This video describes an osmotic avoidance assay to examine chemoavoidance behavior in a transgenic worm model. Avoidance behavior is tested in a plate in the presence of a high-osmotic barrier and chemoattractant. The worms with a functional loss of neurons get attracted by the chemoattractant, cross the high-osmotic barrier, and become paralyzed in the trap zone because of the anesthetic solution.

(2021)This video demonstrates the method for delivering neurotherapeutic drugs using an osmotic pump in a demyelinated mouse model. The controlled drug release promotes remyelination by activating myelin-producing cells in the corpus callosum.
