Oxidative Phosphorylation

Oxidative phosphorylation is the cellular process that produces most of the ATP used to power biological work, making it central to energy metabolism. In eukaryotic cells, electrons from NADH and FADH2 pass through the electron transport chain in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where released energy pumps protons across the membrane. The resulting proton gradient drives ATP synthase to convert ADP and inorganic phosphate into ATP, while oxygen serves as the terminal electron acceptor and forms water. This process links nutrient oxidation to usable energy and supports functions such as muscle contraction, active transport, growth, and cellular maintenance; its disruption can impair tissues with high energy demands.

The addition or removal of phosphate groups from proteins is the most common chemical modification that regulates cellular processes. These modifications can affect the structure, activity, stability, and localization of proteins within cells as well as their interactions with other proteins. During phosphorylation, protein kinases transfer the terminal phosphate group of ATP to specific amino acid side chains of substrate proteins. Serine, threonine, and tyrosine are the most commonly...
