Plant-soil Feedbacks

Plant-soil feedbacks are reciprocal interactions in which plants alter soil conditions and soil changes, in turn, affect plant growth, survival, and community composition. Through roots, litter, and associated microorganisms, plants modify nutrient availability, soil chemistry, and microbial communities; these changes can create positive feedbacks that promote the same or related plants, or negative feedbacks that suppress them through pathogens, competition, or resource depletion. Studying these feedbacks helps explain plant coexistence, succession, invasion, and ecosystem productivity, while informing restoration, crop management, and predictions of vegetation responses to environmental change.
